Bottomless Beef and Wine 剣60 Gaucho

Unlimited steak, chips and wine sounds like the stuff of dreams. But on Sundays, that's exactly what you can get if you go to Gaucho.

A sumptuous restaurant set in an old Methodist church with beautiful art deco features, Gaucho Manchester is well known for its Argentinian steaks and world class wines. Now, for £60, you can indulge in as much as you like of both for a full 90 minutes.

We couldn't wait to get stuck in and give it a go.

Gaucho's new bottomless Beef & Bottle menu comprises of a weekly changing selection of the best cuts of Argentinian steak and regularly changing free-flowing offerings of hand selected wine, chosen by its expert sommeliers and served by the glass.

Our server presented us with a board to show off the three cuts of steak on offer on our visit: ancho (ribeye), delicately marbled throughout for a superb, full-bodied flavour; chorizo (sirloin), a tender yet succulent steak with a strip of juicy crackling; and cuadril (rump), the leanest cut of beef with a pure distinctive flavour.

The steaks come from premium Black Angus cattle, bred in Argentina at hand selected farms where they graze on seventeen different types of grass from the Pampas provinces.

The first serving of steak is 300g per person, and you get to try all three cuts at once. Then you can pick your favourite and they'll bring you another 100g serving. And another, and another.

Wine-wise, you can choose from bottomless white, red or rose. We opted for a full-bodied Oscuro Malbec from Mendoza to match the meat.

There's unlimited servings of skin-on salty chips, too, and fresh green salad to cut through the rich steak. Plus bottomless fragrant chimichurri sauce made with parsley, garlic, olive oil and oregano.

The steaks, cooked in the traditional way over open flame, are utterly delicious, lightly charred outside and juicy pink within.

We swiftly cleaned our plates, and were asked if we'd like more. Well, it would be rude not to, right?

Another 100g of intensely beefy ribeye hit all the right notes, along with more chips and more wine, naturally.

The ribeye is the most popular cut, says our server, and it's easy to see why. Each tender mouthful brings the full pleasure of fire and flesh, the robust savoury flavours giving way to sweet, bloody juiciness.

As someone who would happily forgo pudding and have another steak instead, this is my version of heaven.

But we don't forgo pudding, of course, because that would mean missing out on Gaucho's famously creamy and grin-inducingly sweet dulce de leche cheesecake.

And who can resist a dessert cocktail? Especially when it's a butterscotch bon bon, consisting of Grey Goose vodka, butterscotch schnapps, limoncello, lemon juice and vanilla syrup. Sweet, sharp and marvellously boozy, it's like a lemon drizzle cake in a glass.

But we digress, because Sundays are really all about the steak. Plus the upbeat tones of the live gospel choir belting out toe-tapping tunes, of course.

So how unlimited is unlimited? How much steak do people really manage to eat, I ask our server between forkfuls of chips?

Up to about 800g, is the answer. That's an additional five servings once you've already had the three introductory steaks. Blimey. And when it comes to drink, people tend to manage around a bottle of wine per person, she says.

And that's when you start to see what good value it really is for £60.

A 400g portion of ribeye is usually £34.50, and sirloin £33.50. Chips are normally £5 a portion, with wines around £30 a bottle. Arrive hungry, and you can really get your money's worth. Not to mention take advantage of the opportunity to try several different cuts to work out what you like best.

And us? We leave full, happy, nicely relaxed, and in need of a little lie down. Thank goodness it's Sunday.

This is what weekends were made for, and we can't wait to do it all over again. Please, sir, can we have some more?

Bottomless Beef & Bottle is available at Gaucho on Sundays, all day from midday, for £60 per person.
